Anal Glands

Why does my dog scoot across the floor?

That bum-shuffle across your clean floor looks comical, but your dog's telling you something's itchy or uncomfortable back there. Scooting is a symptom, not a habit, so it's worth working out the cause rather than just laughing it off (fair enough if you do both).

The most common reason is full or blocked anal glands. When those little scent sacs don't empty properly they get uncomfortable, and dragging the area along the ground is your dog trying to relieve the pressure. A fishy smell or lots of licking at the area points this way.

It's not the only cause, though. Worms can make a dog itchy around the bottom, so check your dog's up to date on worming. Allergies and itchy skin can do it too, as can a bit of matted fur, dried poo stuck to the area, or general irritation after a runny tummy.

A one-off scoot after a poo probably isn't a big deal. Repeated scooting, or scooting plus licking, swelling, blood or a bad smell, is worth a vet visit. They can check the glands, rule out worms or infection, and work out what's actually going on. Firm, healthy stools help the glands empty naturally, so a good complete diet with decent fibre is part of the picture too, but get the current problem sorted first.
