Do Kelpies need a special working dog food?

"Working dog" on a bag is more of a price position than a nutritional standard. A lot of those formulas are built for farms feeding a team of dogs, where cost per kilo matters enormously, so they lift the fat to get the energy up and lean on cheaper protein sources to keep the price down. That can work, but it isn't automatically better for your dog.

What a working Kelpie actually needs is energy density and quality, and then simply more of it on the hard days. A good everyday food with real meat at the top of the list, fed at a bigger portion in winter or through docking and mustering, does the job without the compromises.

There's also a practical point that gets missed. Dogs working long days tend to eat one big meal at the end of it, which puts a lot of pressure on digestion in one hit. Food that's easy on the gut matters more for these dogs, not less. Added prebiotics and fibre help keep things steady when the workload swings around.

Splitting the daily amount across two meals, with the bigger one after work rather than before, is common practice among people running dogs hard. It's worth trying if your dog comes home ravenous.
